NORWOOD ADULT MARTIAL ARTS
Adult Jiu Jitsu - Ages 13 and up
Some experts tend to divide the Eastern “unarmed” martial arts into two categories: ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ arts. ‘Hard’ are where the major emphasis is on striking (punching & kicking); for example Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu. ‘Soft’ arts tend to place greater emphasis on grappling (throws and holds), such as Aikido, Judo, and Jujitsu. Our style is a combination of both.
Our adult martial arts classes focuses on street scenario self defense which are designed to teach students how to defend themselves in any situation. Jiu Jitsu loosely translates as ”the science of softness” or “the gentle art” and is applied to many schools of unarmed and hand-to-hand combat. The soft grappling style was intended to help unarmed soldiers to fight against armed enemies in any way possible, using the least amount of force necessary.
Jiu Jitsu was the primary unarmed combat method of the Samurai. Modern day Aikido, Judo, Brazilian Ju Jitsu and MMA are all descendents of Jiu Jitsu.

How do I get started?
All beginner students start with our Introductory Program. Participating in the Introductory Program will give you the “hands on” experience you need to make an educated decision to choose the best school for you. Contact us so you can take an introductory class in order to make an informed decision.
How strict are the classes?
Adults are treated like adults in our school. We believe that if you are mature enough to be training in our style then you are mature enough to know what is and is not appropriate behavior. However, our kids classes are held to stricter guidelines to help them learn respect, discipline and focus.
Can anyone do American Jiu Jitsu?
Students of all ages, physical fitness and experience train in our school. We have students from ages twelve to sixty in our school. Our school enrollment is comprised of a balanced mix of male and female students, the vast majority with no prior experience. If you are not in shape – don’t worry! That’s why you need to enroll – you will enhance your fitness and lose weight while learning self-defense at our school.
I have not done a martial art before. What can I expect my first experience to be like?
You can expect a completely open and friendly environment in your first class and all classes. One of the best parts about our academy is the happy and welcoming nature of our instructors and students.
How long will it take to become reasonably proficient?
The time it takes to become proficient varies with each individual. Students are often amazed by their own ability and accomplishment in as little as six months. Training will give you the confidence of knowing that you can defend yourself in most situations. Your real goal should be to attain the rank of Black Belt. This level of proficiency typically takes about 5 years for adults.
How much time is needed for training in your style?
Progression in our system is based on training 2 days per week. To test each month you need a total of 8 classes. That being said we have a variety of options available to satisfy the financial and time requirements of all our students.
